Artist Statement

I am drawn to patterns, structures and systems. I create art that makes my brain want to sing along. For me, mathematics and computation are tools for tinkering, experimentation and play. I explore how techniques such as agent-based models, parametric design, dynamic geometry and recursive algorithms can be used to produce patterns and forms that balance opposing forces as they spread out across time and space. I am inspired by natural structures and behaviors that have evolved over millions of years as well as the rich history of visual design across human cultures.

My creative process entails close observation of nature, focused deep dives into mathematical and algorithmic representations of a form, and the gradual fine tuning of design choices and parameters to bring the elements of a composition into a configuration that evokes a coherent aesthetic experience. I look for moments of surprise or delight that I encounter while messing about, slow down and inquire as to the genesis of those impressions, and work iteratively as I try to amplify that effect in the pieces I create. I’m curious how emerging technologies and new means for computational and algorithmic making will continue to both reflect changes in society and help to change our thinking.

I am interested in both exploring my own relationship to the world around and within through the art that I create as well as creating tools and experiences for others to do so as well. I usually begin by exploring an idea through my own research, experimentation and making but as I develop my own tools and understanding, I enjoy creating microworlds or sandbox tools that provide opportunities for inquiry, play, problem solving and making to others as well. The process of creating these tools or experiences helps me to deepen my own relationship to my creative work and embody my developing understandings in artifacts. I take joy and delight in seeing how other people, with different backgrounds, histories, interests, skills and world views different than my own might take up and use these tools in ways that are different from what I’ve done or imagined.
